I teach a low-intermediate adult ESL writing class of mostly young Chinese men (late teens to early twenties). On the Friday of the Chinese New Year week, I read this book to them. Most of them were a bit homesick, missing for the first time their families, traditional food, gifts and visits with friends. They had worked hard all week, so I had them relax during the last half-hour of the last class. They commented on the illustrations, read the Chinese characters on the posters by the front doors in the illustrations, debated the correct way to say the characters' names - I obviously wasn't saying them right :>)- and got very quiet as the story wound down to the bittersweet end. They talked about the various customs rendered in the story. We created vocabulary lists based on the illustrations, with a big focus on terms for house repairs. Being young men, they understood the story from the parents' point of view and the child Maomao. Their writing assignment based on the book was to create a different ending.

We like this book a lot. I have been trying to find good books that show a genuine aspect of Chinese people/life for my daughter. Many fail because they are over- Americanized or they are poorly written/illustrated. This one is real and also illustrates a few interesting pieces of Chinese life- the migrant lifestyle of many working class, some of the traditions of Chinese New Year but also the universal love of family and thrills of a small child. The illustrations are wonderful too and give a great sense of the home, the village, the dragon parade! My daughter, who is 3, loves this book so much that she loves to pretend to read it to me and has most of it memorized- that is how much she likes it! Highly recommended.

This book has a very nice narrative about a little girl and how her family celebrates Chinese New Year. Illustrations are very beautiful. It demonstrates good family value of togetherness, kindness and love. We started reading this book to our two year old grandson a month before this year's Lunar New Year, Jan. 23, 2012. He loves so much, he wants us to read to him many times a day since. He is fasinated of the whole story and the people and objects in the book. Especially, the lucky coin that the little girl found in her dumpling, this lucy coin has a very sweet ending which shows a daughter's love to her father, works far away from home, whom she only gets to see once a year. I highly recommend this book for children has Chinese heritage or any one interested in Asian culture. An excellent book to read over and over.

I love this book!

We have two children adopted from China. We buy them books that will give them knowledge about their country. We gave them this book for the Chinese New Year. It is particularly well written and they really enjoy it.

This is a beautiful book.

This book is so well written. It's a beautiful story of the reality of what lots of Chinese children deal with: one of their parents must live far from them for work. It combines Chinese culture with the global concepts of family and work.

A New Year's Reunion was written by Yu Li-Qiong who was born in Anqing, China and who currently lives in Nanjing. It tells the fictional story of a family united only once a year when the father, one of China's 100 million migrant workers, returns home for a few days to see his wife and daughter and celebrate the lunar new year. It's illustrated beautifully and is a cute story of a family's traditions, ending poignantly with the father saying goodbye to go back to work. I'm declaring this one a must-have book--not only does it describe well how a Chinese family celebrates the new year, it also shares how so many people in China live as migrant workers. Count on this book opening the door for great conversations with your kids about life in China and, possibly, questions about birth families if your child was adopted. Get ready.See my other reviews of Chinese New Year themed kids' books on my blog www(dot)myoverthinking(dot)com - look for the post dated January 25, 2012
