About the Author

Niamh Middleton is a former primary school teacher who now lectures about theology at Dublin City University. When she met her teenage sweetheart and future husband Gerry, he was considering becoming a Roman Catholic priest, while she was an atheist. Despite their disagreement on the subject of religion, he changed his mind and they married, becoming the parents of two daughters. Middleton remained an atheist for more than a decade after her marriage until a challenging life event caused her to fall back on her religion and draw comfort from it. She became a born-again Christian and in 1994 began a study of theology which culminated with the award of a Ph.D. in 2003. She lives in the seaside suburb of Clontarf, Dublin, where she is involved in an ecumenical Bible study group. She enjoys reading, writing, music, and traveling.

Homo Lapsus is an invigorating read. It presents a vivid history of the relationship between Science and Christianity on the matter of the genesis of mankind. For many of us the scientific account of human origin and the biblical account are incompatible. However, the author drawing from the works of Wallace, Darwin and contemporary theorists of evolutionary biology/psychology and palaeoanthropology challenges orthodox perspectives on this divisive subject. Dr Middleton draws on her background as an academic theologian to forge a hypothesis that allows for a synthesis between science and religion on this fundamental question. I would buy this book solely for its brilliant, lucid account of the divergence between Wallace's and Darwin's theories of evolution. It also, with great clarity, brings the reader up to date on the hard science – particularly regarding the fascinating fields of palaeoanthropology and evolutionary biology. As a secular humanist I was surprised to the degree that I was drawn into the theological arguments. However, I think that regardless of the reader's world view on opening Homo Lapsus – the journey through it will be immersive and richly informative. (Colman Dooney)
