I would give this book a higher rating, but it contains too many errors....and I am not talking about misspelling a name. There are numerous reviews where he gets plot details completely wrong, so you know he never watched the film at all. Here is his review of EVIL IN THE SWAMP (aka ALL THE KIND STRANGERS): "Children living in a swamp are stalked by photographer James Keach." He then lists several of the cast. James Keach is the hero of the movie. He is kept prisoner along with Samantha Eggar by the parentless children to be their dad. Not only is this review not really a review since it consists of a mere sentence, but the plot is wrong and far less than one could have gotten from the back of VHS box. Here is his review of HOUSE ON STRAW HILL: "Linda Hayden sees a murder committed in an old mansion, but authorities can not find a body. Eventually she discovers that a similar murder happened in the house 20 years ago. Udo Kier, of Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, portrays a novelist in the local village, and he starts having hallucinations." Anyone who has seen this film knows that, not only does Linda Hayden not witness a murder, she is the killer and Udo is the main character. There is no authorities in the moving, no missing body, no discovery of a 20 year old murder. Linda is seeking revenge on writer Udo for stealing a manuscript, which led to the suicide of her husband. There are many more examples throughout the book, so I would take Stanley being a horror expert with a grain of salt.

Although John Stanley's book covers a lot of great movies, there are many problems with the overall context. For example, he seems to only have a vague recollection of a lot of the movies. Because, a lot of reviews get the stories completely wrong. (HELP's plot is not about the Beatles looking for Ringo's magic ring. Everybody knows that!)Some actors are credited with the wrong roles. Also, there are many glaring spelling errors and a slight continuity problem: A title will say "see altertnate title", and that title and review would not be in the book! Mr. Stanley, do a little more research on your films and a more careful job of copy editing and you'll have an invaluable book. The more I read your current volume, the more mistakes I find and the more I feel I could write a better book myself.

It is what it is but what it is happens to be great! John Stanley's fourth edition (originally published in 1994) has more reviews of any sci-fi, horror, or fantasy movies than any other movie guide. If you are a fan of these genres this is the book for you.

The large volume is peppered with photographs of memorable members of his genre - Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr, Vincent Price et at as well as cartoons and drawings and ads from these picture shows.John Stanley has the gift to entertain and his writing shows that: not only has he had up close and personal experience with many of the actors in this field but he has also provided interviews and information both in printed form and on VHS and DVD documentaries.
