About the Author
Mike Barton is an author and photographer from Solana Beach, California. A native of Michigan, Mike moved to sunny California after graduating from Michigan State and worked as an engineer in the Silicon Valley. Michigan is a great place to “be from.” Photography became his true passion when he moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1999 where he tried to photograph every square inch of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. And a second career was launched. While I have taken many courses in photography, I have learned a great deal through experience and experimentation. When I return to a location that I have previously photographed, I am always amazed because I usually find interesting compositions that I didn't notice during my first visit. So I always say - my best photo is the next one I take.

The photography in this book is just amazing! The colors are so vibrant that they look like postcards. The book features charming cottages in Carmel by the Sea just oozing with charm! Where do I start? The quirky architecture, the colors, the arched doorways, the paved walk-ways, the crooked stone chimneys, the fantastic blue ocean views peeking from behind some of these cottages and the vibrant colors of flowers everywhere!I had the pleasure to visit Carmel several years ago, at that time I didn't know the history behind these homes but I do remember thinking how charming and unique each cottage was. Walking through Carmel, truly does feel like walking through a fairy tale land and after immersing myself in this book, it makes me want to go back for another visit! Mike Burton with his keen eye and artistic flair was able to beautifully showcase these one-of-a-kind cottages with a little bit of history thrown in. There are some interior pictures toward the back of the book, but most of the photos are of the exteriors.
Mike Barton is a gifted photographer of architectural subjects as linked to specific communities. In this book, he tackles Carmel, CA and particularly the wonderful 'story book style' homes crafted there by the talented amateur architect and builder Hugh Comstock. Most of these cottages (not all are small) were constructed from about 1928 to 1935. Carmel is also home to a C S Greene (Greene and Greene) Arts and Crafts estate. The photographic treatment concentrates on 'legibility' (a clear depiction of stylistic elements and of whole buildings) and the sort of lush Cinemascope colors found in the movies and on postcards made in the post WWII period. These will bring a world of fantasy and sunshine and vivid color into your life every time you open the book. This book is about the dimensions of a full sized hard cover and is easier to hold and to study than the typical table top show-off book.Text is minimal but effective. Individual buildings are seen more than once and from different angles. Caramel's seascape also comes in for treatment. I'm appreciative that this book is still available!
Carmel is a magical place, worth the trip to see the whimsical, fairy tale cottages built by Hugh Comstock and others. The charm and creativity of the homes is captured in this lovely book by its talented author and photographer, Mr. Barton. However, this book could have been SO much better if not for its tiny size: only 7.5"x9" -- way too small for a book that is comprised almost exclusively of photographs. A full, "coffee table-size" format would have been much more appropriate, especially given the great quality of these images. What a shame!
Beautiful photos of Carmel by the Sea cottages.A little history of the place and who were those who founded the place:In 1770 , San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, near the mouth of the Carmel River, begins construction under the supervision of Father Junipero Serra and with laborers from the people of the nearby Costanoan Rumsen villages. The Mission was originally to be situated in Monterey (at the site of the current chapel of San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey). Father Serra soon decides the mission should be away from the soldiers at the Presidio in Monterey so he explores the Carmel River area where he quickly realizes the advantages for agriculture of good soil and plenty of water.Years after the founding of Carmel Mission in 1771, the dream of Carmel as a village-by-the-sea was realized only slowly at the beginning of the 20th century.
What a gorgeous "coffee table" book to share with friends. The condition of this book is excellent. I love reading about the beautiful, unique cottage homes in Carmel, CA, one of our favorite vacation sites since our honeymoon 46 years ago. (This is a vintage book, so it was difficult to find. We first learned of this title on a garden walk with tour guide Gail through Carmel.)
This is an excellent book. Well printed. We visited Carmel this summer and fell in love. Nice coffee table conversation starter. The print and binding are solid.
I bought this for my wife as we love the Carmel area (we were married in Monterey) -- we have a couple of the other books about the Carmel Storybook houses as well -- and this one is fantastic. The photos and colors are wonderful. I think that this book has the best photos of the Carmel houses that we have seen so far - very artfully done. I'd get one of the other available Carmel books if you want a detailed history of the area or the homes. Well worth the $17 even though it's a smaller sized book.
This is a beautiful book! It is full, cover to cover, with gorgeous pictures of Carmel's Fairy Tale Cottages. It is full of bright, clear photos, detailing the many aspects of the cottages. It is a delight to flip through the pages, and see where someone's imagination has taken them!
