Conley takes us inside the world of academic medicine, where all doctors are trained but where women are still considered inferior. As a result, research and treatment of women's health problems lag far behind those of men, and women's careers and psyches are suffering. Conley eventually returned to Stanford after some of the changes for which she had fought so hard were initiated, but her story makes it painfully clear that, in spite of their advances, female doctors--as well as all other female hospital staff--still have a long way to go before they are judged on the basis of their abilities rather than on their gender. I read straight through this book last night. It's a sort of memoir by Frances Conley, a tenured professor of neurosurgery at Stanford who resigned in the early 90's because of a hostile work environment and entrenched sexism in academic medicine. It's a fascinating read not only because of her experiences but also the twists and turns in academic politics. By many measures and by her own admission, Conley had great success and luck in her career. She had a very successful marriage and home life. Coming from an academically successful and high achieving family, she attended some of the best schools, obtained excellent surgical training, had success in her lab research and in her clinical cases, and was beginning to develop strong recognition in the wider, international research and medical community. However, she ran up against problems of entrenched sexism and in surgery and medicine that she decided she could no longer tolerate, and resigned in protest over activities in her own academic department. By her own description, she was somewhat swept up into a much larger set of issues on sexism in sexual harassment in medicine at the time, and became a role model, spokesperson, and leader for the rights of women in healthcare.Again, a very interesting story even for just the details of the political intrigues and legal issues in the hierarchical academic-medical-industrial complex.

This book describes events which happened 30 - 35 years ago. But it remains relevant because sexist behavior will probably never disappear. I hope (and believe) that the atmosphere at Stanford Med School is much improved. If so, Fran Conley played a big role in the change. The book is better than it's title, which seems sexist to me.I read the book because I briefly knew Fran Conley in 1975. She was Chief Resident, and I was a brand new intern on the neurosurgery rotation. Dr. Conley was cool and calm, betraying no hint of pressure or resentment. She could easily have been mean to the new male doctor, but that never happened. The personalities she describes are exactly as I remember them. Her story is told with a minimum of self pity. The book shows what one highly intelligent and determined woman accomplished. But would she have been such a media star, if she weren't so good looking? Sometimes it works both ways.

Outstanding!! A must read for everyone who is interested in fairness and equality and is appalled by out of date chauvinistic attitudes towards women.

I am a long time therapist that worked in university affiliated hospitals and find that I was rather naive. But my daughter is in medical school andplans to be a neurosurgeon and I found this book (that I read within two days) provides plenty of conversation regarding the past and present.It was excellent and gives a historical perspective of how are society is changing and in some instances not changing.

Great book. Dr. Conley is a courageous woman. My husband loved the book, too.

For any woman considering a professional career, especially one in medicine, Walking Out on the Boys is a must-read--not just for the historical value illustrating the struggles that previous generations of women endured to allow someone like myself to gain entrance into the good ol' boys club but also for the encouragement it imparts to those struggling against the system to be not afraid of standing up for what is right. Men will benefit much from Conley's words as well. As Conley makes certain to mention, she would not have had the courage to continue challenging the Stanford system without the numerous, unquestioned support of her colleagues--women and men. I had an extremely hard time putting down this book. I highly recommend it to others to read!
