About the Author

Beth Wickenberg Ely has been an Episcopal priest since 1990, and trains Eucharistic Ministers and Eucharistic Visitors in dioceses and churches across the country. She is a Canon for Regional Ministry for the Diocese of North Carolina, assisting diocesan churches with networking and congregational development. She is married to Duncan Cairnes Ely, director of the General Board of Examining Chaplains of the Episcopal Church, and they have a son, Penn, who is in law school. She currently resides in Charlotte, NC, and Columbus, NC.

I really enjoy Mrs Ely's writing style. She quickly and clearly explains all the why's, how's, what's, and when's of this ministry in great detail without being overwhelming. My parish recently held a series of meetings/workshops to educate and train a new group of Eucharistic Visitor's using this book as the basis of our discussions. Ely's thoroughness, directness, and easy writing style made this workshop fun and exciting when it easily could have been much more stressful when one thinks about the seriousness of the topic and the significant impact this ministry can have on those on the receiving end of this ministry. Whether Anglican/Episcopalian, Catholic, or Protestant, this book should be required reading for anyone involved in the Eucharistic Visitor ministry!

...you should read this book. It's a quick and easy first read. Short, concise and deeply spiritual, Ely does a great job of grounding the Eucharistic Minister/Visitor in the service of the community as well as the church. I read the book in a couple of hours but have since gone back to it several times. Even if your church or diocese has a a training program, this is a great reference tool and I would recommend anyone who participates in this ministry to read it. Ely's understanding of the ministry and her commitment to it are contagious.

While I ordered "A Manual for Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors", the book that actually arrived was "A Manual for Eucharistic Ministers". It did contain all of the information I was looking for, and I understand that the two books are actually two editions of the same text. Having said that, this is a good resource for those new to Eucharistic Visiting, and a nice overview of Eucharistic Ministry and I would recommend it. I would also suggest Rev. Ely's most recent book on the same subject: "The Cup of Salvation", as a somewhat more practical manual on the same subject.

A well manned manual which takes an EV step by step through The Eucharist. Excellent reference and instructive tool for anyone learning this ministry.

I purchased this book to read because even among some clergy there is little understanding of the ministry of the eucharistic visitor. Among the eucharistic visitors, (lay eucharistic ministers in the Episcopal Church), there is seldom much training or understanding of the sacrament or the spiritual act being performed. Among both the clergy and the lay participants there is seldom a full realization that the EV is not only bringing the sacrament to a person unable to attend regular services, but the spiritual presence of the entire Christian community as well.The author does a wonderful job explaining these relationships between the physical, spiritual, and meta-physical in this function of pastoral care. Her explanations and examples are written concisely, are easy to understand and are spritually grounded and referenced. A fine tutorial.

I chose this rating due to the completeness and depth of training received. The book was very readable and detailed in content. My only problem with the e-book version was that portions of the appendices were printed in a single vertical line making portions of them useless.

Author's opinions go beyond the direction of the church into opinion without making the delineation. At least so it seemed to me. But it does the job of training the EV.
