Review
Why didn't I purchase one of this book for our last trip?! This is such a great book for the kids to get involve with the trip. The letter for the parents is just so true. I tried to find some kids friendly information on the websites and from the library for our last trip, but turn out I was not able to make it fun and interesting enough for my 8 years old to get involve. The information brochures I can get from the famous landmarks never come with kids' friendly versions. For me and my husband to be my son's "tour-guide" was not working at all. This book is colorful with words and with many images of famous landmarks. It talked about history, geography, fun facts, famous landmarks and important events and people in short paragraphs that are easy to read. Some crosswords and games for kids to play. I especially love that this book also has a diary section, summary of the trip, and a journal section with spaces for pictures. This is not only a great travel guide for the kids, but also a great memory book for kids to keep to remember the trip. --bsWhat really caught my eye was how colorful the cover of this book is. I really liked the different pictures of monuments and things to see on the front cover of the book. Upon opening the book and flipping through the pages, I noticed that there are plenty of places for the kids to fill in about their travels. It also has trivia about the city or country you are visiting (in this case it is San Francisco). This book is really neat because it has little stories about the city and bits of information. It has a packing list and a world map to show where the country/city or countries are in relationship to where you are coming from. It also talks about history and monuments. My kids are looking forward to filling this out on our travels and can't wait to get there. I may have to buy another one so both of them have one to fill out on their own! Katie Tylock --Katie TylockFun things offered in the book:- TO DO lists to check off what you have done at various places in the city- "Did you know?" information throughout- word search puzzles- fill in the blank questions- Fast Facts- short quizzes- Short Q & A with the kids at various places throughout (ex.: How long is the Golden Gate Bridge?) --kb

Fun way to introduce school age children to the city of San Francisco. The book is a guide book and travel diary of sorts. Children will have lots of fun learning how to prepare for their trip and what to pack. Authors include a short history, what to see, and how to get around. Points of interest covered of special interest to kids are spots like Chinatown, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Telegraph Hill. All of the information is presented by using fun activities, puzzles, games, coloring, and lots of interesting illustrations. Near the end of the book, children are encouraged to summarize their trip and are presented with the challenge of a fun to do quiz to test their vacations smarts. When all is said and done, the completed book becomes a souvenir for the child and all those who participated in the experience with her. Recommended for children ages six through twelve; a worthwhile investment for parents, grandparents and teachers.
This "travel guide" is meant to send to a child who will be visiting you in San Francisco.
My little sister and I have a 25-year age difference, and I moved out of state long before she was born. So, in addition to weekly Facetime dates and annual visits to see family in Texas, I try to send her fun little gifts periodically to strengthen our connection and to help her learn something about me, the world outside of Texas, and about herself and her abilities. So, seeing this little workbook, I thought it was the perfect gift to send! Her eyes lit up when she opened it, and when I explained that it's about the part of California that I live around, she was even more excited. I will add that the workbook activities were definitely for children older than her (as far as average-level skills are concerned). She just turned six, so as much as she loves the information in the book, the activities like the crossword puzzles are a bit too complicated for now. But she has had fun doing the wordsearch activities and coloring! She and my dad are planning a trip to SF to visit within the next year, so she's been telling me the places in the book that she wants to see when she gets here! One thing I hadn't considered when purchasing this was how much my OTHER sister would get out of it. I have a 22 year old sister who lives at home in Texas, too, but I typically send her more "grown up" gifts, like posters, music, and movies. She is developmentally disabled and, in terms of her interests, specifically, she is similar to a tween - averse to anything that seems like it's "for kids". But she saw this workbook and fell in love! It's actually a thing now - making sure she and the other sister are actively taking turns and sharing as they work on it. She does not read, but loves coloring all through it and asking my parents to show her what certain pages say.So, my take-away is that this is a great product, but be advised that there is a lot of reading involved. It is the perfect thing for kids who are able to read and work independently and/or for family time, with adult assistance and interaction. =)I'll add for full-disclosure that I received this product at a discounted rate in exchange for product testing and review. As a long-time Amazon fangirl, I've become pretty dependent on user reviews when I make purchases, and my goal in reviewing products is to highlight features and drawbacks that I would want to know about as a buyer. I have no vested interest in hyping up the product for the manufacturer to increase sales (especially at the detriment of the consumer - gross!) and receive no incentives or compensation for positive reviews. My words are unbiased, genuine, and sincere. They are meant to further empower the Amazon shopper to make the most informed decision possible when sifting through a sea of purchasing option and maximize the efficiency of online shopping. =)
As with New York City, I have been to San Francisco many, many times, mostly for business, but love the city and now have a few friends who have moved there from the Memphis area. I love to visit the city and have often thought that it would be a great place to live given my background in software development, but the cost of living there... wow, it's expensive! But I digress...Now that my kids are past the diaper and bottle stages of their lives, I would love to take them to San Francisco sometime and let them see where "daddy goes to work every year". ;-)The Kids' Travel Guide to San Francisco is a fun book, filled with chapters dedicated to keeping the kids interested in checking all that San Francisco has to offer.Only one page is dedicated to the parents (page 4). This page explains how this book can help get the kids motivated to check out the sights of the city, take a tour, visit a museum, or visit The Pier. There are various fun things to do in the book that keeps the kids active in trying to fill out the entire book while on their trip.Fun things offered in the book:- TO DO lists to check off what you have done at various places in the city- "Did you know?" information throughout- word search puzzles- fill in the blank questions- Fast Facts- short quizzes- Short Q & A with the kids at various places throughout (ex.: How long is the Golden Gate Bridge?)I received this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say that the series of books The Flying Kids produce are excellent. What a fun way to keep the kids interested in exploring the city and off their devices and TV.
