I won't be able to read this book to the children I work with. From the beginning the book blames the puppy (used to illustrate a child in foster care) for EXISTING when it reads, "my two brothers and three sisters [and I] were too much for her [mom] to care for." From there the puppy is utterly confused by the behavior of its new owners (foster parents) and blames himself for their behavior, which is often the case for children in foster care. Unfortunately, thought, I think the story lacks a helpful ending that could affirm a child's inherent value, regardless of behavior or circumstance. It reads, "Even though I was naughty she [foster mom] left her party to look for me..." The story seems to send the message to kids in foster care, "I was too much for my mom... I wasn't good enough to be kept in other foster homes... I happen to be LUCKY ENOUGH to be in one now that still wants me even after I've been bad." I am a social worker employed as a child/adolescent group and family therapist. I am returning the book. The two stars are for the excellent notes in the back of the book- very good info for people who foster kids.
Bought this book as a way to prepare our 3 1/2 y/o foster daughter for her move to a new family. We were able to draw similarities between Murphy's three homes and her own. The book (with a few others) helped us have some very difficult conversations in a way she could, at least partially, understand. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the way the woman at the second home was portrayed (impatient, domineering, etc.). I worry that she'll remember me that way, too, even though I'm not the reason she's moving.
I really wanted to like this book because it focused on having three homes before getting to your final home. Instead it focused on the problems with the second home (foster care) instead of the first home causing you to be in foster care. I found that to be odd. It also focused on what the dog did wrong to have to move to the final home instead of trying to find the dog a forever home. I understand that kids think they did something wrong, but this book almost confirms that indeed they did something wrong to have to move to another house.I decided not to use it.
I am a therapist working with kids in the foster care system. This book explores the life of the little dog Murphy who have several experiences similar to those that children in foster care often experience. It helps kids normalize their personal experiences and take the blame for their situation away from themselves. I use this book often with new kids I see and have reviewed it with others.
I gave it 5 stars, I might have given it 4 and 1/2 if that was an option. The only reason I say that is he has 4 homes in the book. His home with his mother, which is well done and doesn't blame her or make her out to be a monster. But then he is removed and put in a new home where he is basically abused/neglected and then removed. If it was a child entering foster care, they might think that bad people can be foster parents. Then he goes to another home which doesn't work out and finally his forever home. Its good for a child who has been in multiple placements and/or bad placements. I do think the book is well written and definitely had value! The kids enjoyed it and it helped them understand foster care better, but that was with relatives and children not actually in foster care.
My soon to be adopted 3 and 4 year old relate to the story of Murphy going to many homes. We can talk about Murphy and send messages to the kids about their place in our home. Well done, sweet book.
This book has been great for our 4 year old child who has spent most of the past several years moving through foster homes. It is definitely written for a slightly older audience, but the story is simple enough and the images engaging so we just leave out the details and simplify the sentences for him as we read it.It has been a great tool to help him understand the "why" behind some of the changes in his young life, and given him a comparison point to use when talking about various experiences. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone with a child who has had a lot of disruption in their life, especially children in the 5-8 age range.
My husband and I are becoming Foster parents and hope to adopt soon. We got this book for our nieces and nephews (ages 3-11) as a way to introduce them to the concept of foster to adoption. The book had a very powerful impact on them and gave the children just enough information to create positive dialouge and understanding. We will continue to use this book once we have foster children in our home as a way of justifying their feelings of being in foster care.
