This is likely the most readable and accessible, yet still informative book on Revelation. Koester has carefully and thoughtfully engaged various perspectives and does so with a sense of humility. Many of the other commentaries or theological interpretations of Revelation carry a sense of superiority about them, but Koester avoids this. The first chapter about the history of various positions is worth the price of the book itself, as understanding the historical trajectory of Revelation's interpretations will help better discern how to and not to read the book into our own time. Every generation has sought to pull out texts of their original context to try and form relevant case of Revelation. When discussing the seven churches, he provides just enough historical context, which roots the reader in the fact that the Revelation 4-22 is still a letter to those same seven churches (often overlooked in some theological circles). This is not to say that there is no contemporary relevance, but that we must start with the reality that Revelation is an illustrative letter to a particularly group of people.

Much food for thought. Having spent much time studying Revelation in the manner of which Koester speaks against, it makes me wonder why we don't hear much of his thoughts spoken by other individuals. It would be tough to change camps on this subject.

The book of Revelation is perhaps the most difficult book of the Bible to understand. Many interpretations exist placing its relavance anywhere from the author's time to the 21st century and beyond. Some use the literal translation and some see symbolism. The book is loaded with symbolism and Koester gives one of the best uses of them that I have read. The first thing that caught my attention was his pointing out to whom the book was addressed. Christ spoke to John saying, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: Ephesus," etc. Since the message was sent to the churches in Asia, it stands to reason that it was intended for their edification. The author lays out a good case for this, recognizing that the last chapters of Revelation do refer to end times. The book is interesting, thought provoking and challenging, especially if one is interested in Bible Prophecy!

This book is very interesting, very well written, and very easy to understand. (Revelation is a VERY difficult book to understand and Professor Koester makes it much easier for the reader to know what the writer of Revelation is talking about.) I have a DVD on Revelation by Professor Koester and I discovered he writes as well as he lectures. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the book of Revelation.

This is an awesome survey of Revelation and of interpretive approaches to Revelation throughout church history. Koester brings scholarship and extensive Bible knowledge to bear on his discussion of Revelation. Besides being a great reference that I will refer back to, this book helps connect the reader to Revelation’s spiritual message. Koester helps the reader understand Revelation, and by understanding Revelation, understand God.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It changed my understanding of Revelation for the better. I now see the book as totally relevant to my life. Every Christian who reads and studies the Bible needs to read this book.

I've never read anything before that helped me understand the book of Revelation like this book does. Not only is it elegantly written in attention getting prose, but Craig Koester's interpretations are characterized by careful theological reflection. It is also happily free from many of the sensational and erroneous reflections that are heard coming from many of the apocalyptic television pulpits of America. I also like the way Koester understands the 7 cycles of visions in Revelation and how how one blends into the next one. He points out that every vision ends with a triumphant vision of Christ, which is something I hadn't quite noticed before, but won't soon forget.A previous reviewer pointed out that this book has no study questions, and for this reason I would hesitate to use it as a textbook for a Sunday school class. This is the kind of book you would give to the well read member of your parish or your family. And if you happen to be in some kind of ministry, then this is would be one of the books I would want with me if I were preparing to teach a class on Revelation or if I was preparing a sermon. It is easy to read, hard to put down at times, and always thought provoking.

I cannot recommend this commentary highly enough! If you want a clear understanding of Revelation, this is an amazing book!
