As I've been making my way through Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instruments" series, I've found that however tired I get of the characters and reused plots, Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn, is always the shining light of the series and somehow makes each book more enjoyable with his presence. So I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that a collection of short stories centered on everyone's favourite warlock was going to be released. If you love Magnus and his eccentric personality, "The Bane Chronicles" is the book for you. Spoilers follow."The Bane Chronicles" is comprised of eleven short stories that tell of different points in Magnus's life. Since he's been alive for hundreds of years (it's hard to say exactly how many centuries - he routinely lies about his age), Magnus has had quite a few adventures. The book covers his misadventures in Peru (why he was banned Magnus still doesn't know), a run-in with Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution, various encounters with members of the Herondale family in the 1800s, a couple instances dealing with the Hotel Dumont and the vampires that call it home, dealing with a newly-Changed Raphael Santiago, a battle with Valentine's Circle, meeting Jocelyn and agreeing to hide young Clary's Shadowhunter traits, and the growth of his relationship with Alec Lightwood. Throughout all of his adventures, Magnus is always magnificent, always looking for excitement and, of course, always fashionable. The short stories vary in length and quality, but they're all enjoyable (though the first story about Peru does go on a bit long, especially since we never really learn why Magnus was banned from the country). It's interesting to see Magnus in different settings with different characters and varied scenarios. Like I said earlier, he's easily one of the best characters in Clare's books, so it's very satisfying to have some stories that focus solely on him without the drama that other certain characters (looking at you, Clary) bring to the other books. While I wish we could have seen more of Magnus's earlier life (more on that in a moment), these tales provide some amusing insight into his past escapades and what ultimately makes Magnus, well, Magnus. I had to keep reminding myself that these were short stories, as I often wanted more information and more content than was provided. My interest was piqued and I'd have loved to see more, but I was ultimately content with the length and content of the stories...they were typically as long as they needed to be and told the tale they needed to. Some of them feel more connected to one another than others, but they all do their job: telling interesting, enjoyable stories about everyone's favourite warlock.I was impressed by the writing in the stories and felt that they captured a good range of themes as well as Magnus's overall tone. Like Clare's other books, "The Bane Chronicles" is written in the third-person, but the writing definitely demonstrates Magnus's character. He practically could have written it himself since his snark, whimsy, occasional obliviousness, and lofty opinion of himself shine through in the word usage and general tone of the book. What's more, we get a lot of different emotions from this. Sometimes the prose takes on a more humourous element. There were several points in the warlock's misadventures that made me chuckle or snort with amusement (generally a little embarrassing since I read most of this novel while at the gym, but no matter!). Other moments were more somber. I was particularly touched by Magnus's plight of living forever and how it affects his romantic life in that people he cares about tend to die in what essentially amounts to a blink of an eye for him. He also routinely faces discrimination from both the Shadowhunters and fellow Downworlders, which he mostly takes in stride. Perhaps it's because the last "Mortal Instruments" book I read was such a disappointment, but I wasn't expecting this level of writing from these stories. I came into this novel expecting some fun tales that focused on the best character from Clare's books and was pleased to find some snappy writing and impacting moments of introspection, all of which aid the book in fleshing out the mystery that is Magnus. In addition to providing some more insight into Magnus's character, "The Bane Chronicles" also builds more detail into Clare's world. I know some readers complain about her world building, but I'm actually rather impressed with how consistent and detailed it is (for the most part). I enjoyed reading about the different groups of Downworlders presented here, and since Magnus has more of an insider's perspective than the usual Shadowhunter, we perhaps see more than we otherwise would. We also get a better feel for the complex relationship the Downworlders have with each other and the Shadowhunters, again because of the different viewpoint. There are stories devoted to different historical events that are alluded to in the other books as well as events that are completely new, so we don't just learn about Magnus, but also gain more knowledge of Clare's world. On a random note, I love the small nods here and there to the pop culture of the time. Being as fashionable as he is, Magnus tends to enjoy whatever's "in" for the current time period, and having these references adds a certain level of authenticity to the text. It's a nice touch and a small detail that manages to stand out.The main character is, of course, Magnus Bane. If you don't like Magnus in the other Shadowhunter books, I don't know why you'd bother picking this book up because it's all him and everything he entails. Some reviewers have complained that Magnus is whiney, judgmental, and selfish. All I can say to that is of course he is...he's Magnus, after all. He's never exactly hidden who he is. Like I said earlier, I've always thought that Magnus was consistently the best character in the series, and all "The Bane Chronicles" has done is solidify that opinion. He's delightfully in character throughout and novel and shows signs of having grown by the end of it. It goes without saying that he's a satisfying main character...these stories likely wouldn't have been written if he wasn't so intriguing. I've read some reviewers that claim that this book takes away the mystery that surrounds this magnificent warlock, but I don't think that's entirely true. Yes, we see more of him and get a better understanding of who he is and how he functions, but there are still so many unknowns that aren't addressed, so many things we have yet to learn about him. It's possible to flesh a character out without destroying the enigma of the character, and this book manages to do that quite well.Magnus surrounds himself with a colourful array of characters...both figuratively and literally, in some cases. I haven't read all of Clare's books, so both Ragnor and Catarina were new to me. They're written well enough to get a feel for their personalities, and definitely add something to the stories in which they are present. Fans of Clare's "Infernal Devices" trilogy will likely be pleased to see the a couple members of the Herondale family as well as Tessa, Will, and Jem. I can't comment on how true to character they were since I haven't read that trilogy, but what we see of them is interesting enough. I personally enjoyed Raphael's journey and seeing his character grow into what we see in later books. Perhaps most significantly, we see more of Alec. I'll be honest; Alec has never been one of my favourite characters. I don't dislike him, per se, but have never considered him to be that intriguing or even important a figure. Here, however, the character really shined, possibly because, as Magnus himself puts it, Alec is often overshadowed by Jace and Isabelle's beauty and strong personalities when he's with his friends (and perhaps Clary's drama, but that's just my bias sneaking in again). So we not only get a better look at Magnus, but Alec also is given more depth. There aren't really any boring characters in the book; all do their part and add their own unique flavour to this colourful collection. There are ultimately two things that keep me from giving "The Bane Chronicles" a five star rating. The first is, as I mentioned above, that I'd have liked to see more of Magnus's earlier life. He mentions his rough upbringing with a family that couldn't accept what he was and the hardships that entailed many times throughout the stories as well as other potentially entertaining escapades he's had in his earlier years, but we don't get to see any of this. Perhaps seeing these things would have succeeded in taking away the mystery that some claim this book did. Who's to say? The farthest any of the stories here go back is the late eighteenth century, and I'd have personally liked to see the authors explore some settings that aren't already covered in Clare's other books. Magnus has been around for a while, so why limit what we're shown to a mere two hundred or so years? The second issue is more of a personal thing. As I've already mentioned, I have not read the "Infernal Devices" trilogy. Yes, shame on me, but I was too interested in some Magnus-centric stories to read Clare's other works before this book. I had hoped this wouldn't be an issue, but I got the distinct impression that the reader is supposed to have read all of Clare's other books before this one. There are a couple stories that take place during the same general time period as the "Infernal Devices" trilogy and feature the same characters and I frankly found myself getting a little lost simply because a lot of things weren't explained. For example, at one point Magnus is marveling that Will, Tessa, and Jem are all together again and, despite many years apart, have maintained their strong friendship. He goes on about this for a bit, but it was sort of lost on me because the context was never provided. What made them such good friends? Why have they been apart? Why is this significant? Again, this is mostly my fault for not reading everything, but I was thinking this would be a more independent novel that didn't require explicit knowledge of the events and lore of the other books. As a result, things that I felt were supposed to be significant fell a bit flat due to simply not having the context for them to have much of an impact.I can't end this review without a brief mention of the little comic pages before each chapter. Each story gets a one-page, sort of manga-style drawing that portrays a scene from the chapter. They're pretty cute and provide a nice little sneak-peek to what's in store for the reader."The Bane Chronicles" certainly succeeds in what it set out to do; that is, give us some entertaining stories of Magnus's adventures and provide some insight to this enigmatic fellow. If I'm going to be honest, I might have been disappointed had I purchased each story individually since they're so short, but they work well as a unified collection. I don't think it really needs to be said, but I'll say it anyway: if you don't particularly care for Magnus in Clare's other novels, please don't bother with this book because you likely won't enjoy it. If, however, you're like me and think he's the best part of the series, then this book is a must have, full of the quirky fun, entertaining misadventures, and sometimes solemn (and a tad melodramatic in the best way) brooding that accompanies this fashionable warlock. Four stars.

I can’t stop smiling. This book is perfection <3I have fallen in love with the world she’s created and everyone (well almost everyone…) in it. Magnus Bane was a favorite of mine in the other books and I jumped on the chance for more revolving around his life. I wasn’t disappointed. You see how much depth his character really has, because while his sarcastic humour and eccentric fashion is what first made me take notice, it was the shadowy feelings of love and loss which captured my attention. We see so much of both, meaning you won’t be hearing any complaints from me!All the individual stories were so interesting in their own ways, but my favourite had to be “The Course of True Love (And First Dates)” which features so much Malec (Magnus & Alec) that my inner fangirl rose to the surface and went crazy. This combination of the short stories is a fabulous edition to the Shadowhunter World that all fans of will love and must read.

This collection of short stories focuses on Magnus Bane and his exploits throughout the years. The authors seem to have ideas, but no real idea how to tie things up and end their stories. There is a lot of setup, a LOT of describing Magnus’s outfits, and some interesting plot ideas..... and then the stories just end abruptly with no conclusion.I love Magnus Bane and wanted to love this book, but it became a slog to get through the writing, I was continuously disappointed by the non-endings, and it got to the point where I was actually rolling my eyes at the endless descriptions of what he was wearing.Stick with her series, & skip this one, as it adds nothing to the Shadowhunters world.

If you liked the character of Magnus Bane throughout The Infernal Devices and The Shadowhunter series, then this book should be a must buy for you! Yeah, parts of it are a little annoying, as it makes you wish that you could read on and find out more, but as each part is essentially a short story, some are a little unresolved (like what happened in Peru). BUT... the insights this collection gives you into the character of Magnus Bane is incomparable! I absolutely adore this character, so I found them satisfying and enjoyable. I also like the little cartoon at the beginning of each part, and for me, having a physical copy of this book was worth importing it from the UK somewhere and waiting the three weeks it took to get it to me in AUS. Wishing that Cassandra Clare would tell us more about his future/past life. Happy reading!

I enjoyed so much reading more about Magnus's life...How he met Will's father, when Jocelyn brought Clary to him for the first time...how it went his first date with Alec. And also knowing more about his relationship with Camille, and his warlock friends. My favorite I guess I should say it is when he sees Will after 24 years...he helps Will's son, James, to go back to home and he encounter with Tessa and Will. It was so hear warming and one of the things i most like about this book, is that shows how much Magnus cared about Will and how many thing resembled him of Will.

Shadowhunters TV series led me wanting to read all the books regarding the shadowhunter universe, especially anything about my favorite characters Magnus and Alec. Malec lovers will find themselves even deeper in love with these two characters while reading "What To Buy The Shadowhunter Who Has Everything (And Who You're Not Officially Dating Anyway)" and "The Course of True Love (and First Dates)", two short stories in The Bane Chronicles dedicated to them.People would think that for one as powerful and experienced as Magnus, nothing could possibly hurt or touch him in the normal sense. On the contrary, he is just so sensitive and caring, though always putting on a nonchalant front. It's really heartbreaking to see that when shown a small act of kindness or acceptance, Magnus is so ready and willing to give so much more in return. I'm just so happy that he's found someone worthy of his heart in Alec.

It is a beautiful book about stamps. It would be great for a library. I was looking for a book that would help be estimate the value of stamps I own.

Got this for my daughter. She is very happy with it.

Thank you

I purchased this book for my 8-year-old son, who was just starting to collect stamps. He thoroughly enjoyed the book and I read it with him. Even though I have been collecting off and on since 1976, I found this book enjoyable and refreshing. It brought back to mind some of the basics and my son was encouraged when I showed him easier ways to accomplish some of his tasks. Recently, he has decided to wait until he is little older to collect stamps because he is not organized enough to give the hobby the time and commitment required. He is helping me keep my collection up to date instead, mostly because I collect mint never hinged (MNH) stamps and he was collecting used stamps. He thinks my collection looks better than his. But I have been getting him some MNH stamps and putting them to the side for the future. This book is very factual and entertaining to read. It is not a dry or boring textbook type of read. Everyone who is a stamp collector or philatelist should have this book in their reference library, young or old, beginner or mature collector. Enjoy the read!!

It wasn't exactly what I'd been looking for. I really wanted more detail on international stamps and their prices.

Good purchase

I love this trilogy. Many people have such a problem with the lead character in book 1, Beatrice Lacey, that they cannot fathom reading books 2 & 3. But if you do, you will be very surprised. These books must be read together to see the whole picture. This is one of my all time favorite trilogies or series by one of my favorite authors. Great, thought provoking read that you will not forget.

Compelling reading, another can't-put-it-down series of books! I did not give it 5 stars only because there are a couple of places in the plot where I said to myself, "Come on - really??" It was early in the author's career, so I think it was just that her skills were not yet as refined as they were eventually to become. But I wanted the series to continue! I'd have read more about these characters, to be sure. And where else can you find a story that tells you about life in a circus and how to catch a trout without a fishing rod?

I went and read some of the 1 star reviews just to see what was the problem. I guess I found this book riveting & describes how desperate people do desparate things. I got the feeling that Beatrice thought, "just this one terrible thing & then I am done." Kind of like a gambler that swears the next hit will pay off. But it was a tale of chasing what you don't have at the peril of what you do, & loosing it all. Sorry I loved it & am starting the 2nd book. Rarely do I watch a movie or read a book & not have a sense of what will happen next. This book has so many twists and turns that I never saw some of it coming. I stumbled on to the White Queen & Tudor series & really enjoyed her historical fiction. I was a bit disappointed when I realized it was not based on any real life event. But wow in the end it didn't disappoint. It is a dark tale, with really damaged characters.

This book is well written, though a bit odd at times. It offers a very honest and raw glimpse into the inner workings of a mind dedicated to a single cause. Beatrice, in the end, is by any measure a horrible person, yet because you are intimately acquainted with her mind, you can’t help but feel some pity for her. She didn’t start out that way. Due to her unyielding desires, the laws that govern her land and the choices of others, she becomes more and more withdrawn from human connection and hardened to the feelings of others. She is willing to hurt anyone that stands in her way and knows how to manipulate those around her to suit her purpose. Parts of the plot may be cringe worthy, but it’s such a profound description of human experience that it makes those parts interesting. Overall it’s pretty good.

I cannot understand why anyone would give this book more than 1 star. One other reviewer stated that it is like reading the biography of a sociopath and I agree. I, too, kept waiting for some redeeming event but it just gets colder, darker and more depressing as it goes along. It left me feeling kind of stunned, sad and sick to my stomach. I absolutely will not read the other books in this series. This book was not a delight to read-it became a ponderous chore. Couldn't wait to be done. I won't include any spoilers in this review but the heroine is sickening. There is nothing heroic, or even human, about her. Other reviewers state that she is the heroine you love to hate but I just plain couldn't stand her or this novel. I have never written such a scathing review of a book before. This one, however, deserves it.

There are over 200 reviews so of course I won't rehash the plot, and I don't know if this review will ever even be read since it is so far down the line. However I was shocked by the low ratings. From what I can gather this author has a wide following with her later books. Wideacre was her first book, the first of a trilogy and the first book of hers I have read. Since I came to this novel with no previous expectations based on her later work I was able to enjoy it very much since I had no preconceptions. This is definately a saga, and will not be something for everyone since it does have an incestuous relationship, but that is not the core nor the heart of the novel. At its heart this is the story of how far a determined, unwavering woman will go to secure for herself the land that she loves. That doesn't sound like a bad thing but it becomes one when her desire for the land blinds her to the consequences of her increasingly horrid actions. I would like to say a lot more about this absorbing novel but I don't want to reveal to much.. I hate spoilers in reviews!I guess I will content myself by saying please don't be put off this book by the negative reviews from people who came to this story with preconceived notions. It is absorbing, masterfully written and darkly fascinating. It sort of reminds me of Through A Glass Darkly which was published in the late 80's I think and has a devoted "cult" following. Also, if you like Anne Rivers Siddons I think you will like this book as well. Even though Siddons books are on the surface nothing like this one (place, time periods etc.) the dark heart of Ruth Yancey Fox from her brilliant novel Foxes Earth can be felt in Beatrice Lacey the anti-heroine of Wideacre.I very much loved this book and hope that one more positive review may encourage more readers to take a chance on it.A side note for Kindle readers.....ugh the scan from print to ebook format made for lots of errors. Nothing that takes away from the joy of reading the book, but punctuation errors are pervasive.

The Dragon Rustler by Anthony A Kerr was truly an amazing book that I couldn’t put down no matter how hard I tried. Before I even started reading it I was hooked, just based on what someone told me about the novel, and I get a lot of people telling me about books they’ve read. This is the first one that I literally couldn’t get out of my head and had to read it immediately and was in love with before I even read a sentence of the story. We meet Miranda and her brother Justin in their small apartment in New York and immediately you already know something very odd is going on. Her parents are secretive, secretive men show up, her and her brother start having weird dreams, and then their world turns upside down because of this visit. They find out they have a grandfather in Colorado and rather than doing what they wanted for the summer they’re sent to live with him on his ranch.Like all kids they get curious and go investigating, because when you’re told not to go in somewhere you desperately want to know what is in there. They eventually find out that their grandfather raises dragons and that someone has been stealing from the ranch. At first all clues point to one person, and end the end it is the last person you’d expect to be the thief. I really didn’t see that coming at all.Kerr told this story in such a manner that swoops you into the story immediately and leaves you craving more and more, until there is nothing left and you have to wait for the next one. And right now I really have a lot of unanswered questions and truly want to know what happens next so I’ll be paying attention for the next one because I need my questions answered.Kerr has such an amazing imagination and depicts these dragons in such a realistic manner that I almost forgot that dragons aren’t real. But how cool would it be if they really were real and this could really happen. Riding on a dragon would be the greatest thing in my opinion, and reading this novel is the closest thing I’m going to get to being able to do that, since sadly dragons don’t exist except in our dreams.

I really enjoyed The Dragon Rustler. It's not the genre that I usually read so I was pleasantly surprised by it. My previous experience with dragons is with my son with How to Train Your Dragon and since he and I have enjoyed those stories, I thought we would enjoy this one too. In fact my intention was to read this aloud to my son, but I ended up reading it on my own in just a coupe nights because I couldn't wait to see what happened. What was fun about The Dragon Rustler is that it was such a great adventure, with so much intrigue, that of course kids will like it but adults too. It really kept me guessing and I was actually quite surprised with the ending. My favorite character was the little boy Justin and the banter he has with Red. They made me laugh on several occasions. I can't wait to see where the next book in the series takes us!

The Dragon Rustler Reviewby Caleb The Dragon Rustler was a great book with lots of interesting characters. I think I’m going to rate this book 4.9 out of five stars. I’m not rating it 5 stars because normally when series starts the first one just lets you know the characters and shapes the story line and gets you into the series. Then writers have a story that is ready have more action and adventure in the second book Miranda and Justin will be more experienced and ready for a quest even . You did a good job introducing all the characters and the ranch with the map in the book of thunder bird ranch. I enjoyed it because it had good characters and storyline. Whenever the dragon rustler was revealed, I didn't know much about him.He kind of came out of nowhere. Or maybe I just skipped a page. I think this book built up the characters well. I’m looking forward to the second book. The second book i’m guessing is about them fighting the Draconian and the queen that created all monsters. Or they do the dragon contest you talked about. I’ve been wondering is this book going to be a trilogy or is it gong to have 3-5 books or more in the series. I think you were very creative with your story and characters. You did a great job with the elements of writing in your book. There was many scenes that had action in them. For some books in the first book its all introduction. In this book there was a good introduction and it had some high paced action scenes as well in the book.I liked the part when Justin and red were catching the baby dragons. I also liked when they were on the mountain with the dragon rustler and billy.I also liked that there were surprises, like that em used to ride miranda’s dragon.I also liked how you couldn’t easily predict the dragon rustler. Overall this a great book with good characters and story.I rate it 4.9 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.About me : I’m 11 and I have read many fantasies. My favorite is Harry Potter 7: The Deathly Hallows.I enjoy reading a lot, I read every night before I sleep. I like that this book doesn’t remind me of other fantasies. That is good because most fantasies are about wizards and mythology but this is an original story so you won’t have copyright problems.

A rollicking adventure, that had me on the edge of my seat with what might happen next. The author paints a fantastic world that appeals to the imagination and wonder in all of us. He develops unique and unforgettable characters, and I look forward to following the further adventures of Miranda, Justin, Red, and Storm in the upcoming books. Not only a great story, but Mr. Kerr touches on the challenges, insecurities, and hopes and dreams that we all feel as children, and carry with us as adults. With lessons in courage and persistence, I highly recommend this book to children of all ages. It's been awhile since I have read good fiction, let alone science fiction, and this is a tremendous yarn, that reminded me of why I enjoyed reading in the first place (so long ago!). Thank you for writing and sharing your gift,

Love how the author kept me guessing who the dragon rustler was right up until the end. He did a fabulous job of giving several characters convincing motives. I appreciated the bond between the kids and the dragons. It reminded me a lot of Anne McAffrey’s work.

very convenient to have a interactive lesson plan and craft/game to occupy the children. We have 4 rotating teachers and we are able to hand off the book to the next teacher every month and they can step right in and pick up where the last one left off. Easy to use format makes preparation easy for Sunday. If you want to do it right, and do the games, crafts, you do have to gather materials. I am not complaining, just saying that for those of you that want to just sit down and open a book and read a lesson to your bored kids, this might not be your book.

I have children in my class from 4-12, which makes this a perfect resource. Feels almost like it was written for my children's church group in mind. Some of the projects are a little time consuming to pull together and take more time than we have in our class period but the kids really enjoy the lessons and activities.

We love this...its perfect for our Church. We are a growing church with a space problem which lead to us putting our 5-11 yr olds in one larger room. This book is so amazing to teach to all them at one time. It was a program saver for us. Each lesson has many ideas so teachers can pick and choose what they want to do with the kids and there is always more then enough to cover the hour long Sunday morning program. If you have a one room program this is the book you have been praying you could find!

A lot of prep work to use!

Sunday school lessons

Love all her books. Easy to follow.

My husband and I are youth leaders at our church. It's a smaller sized church out in the country and finding the curriculum to suit our needs and desires is difficult. We desire to have an interactive lesson that grabs the attention of all the children (no matter what age). We need it to be cost efficient and very flexible. The entire past year was amazing and while I give God all the glory I know this curriculum played a role in that. It's going to be hard finding another program that lives up to this one.

So much fun to read. The tone and delivery perfect: subtly irreverent, but gosh darn, you learn so much. We've had an uproarious time reading it around the dinner table. Our discussions do segue into what else was going on at that time or with such and such a character or industry, thanks to history major father. As the hopeful matriarch trying to get her kids focused on something else besides the Kardashians or World of Warcraft, this book so works for me.

I love the dark and dirty side of Philadelphia. The stories are very entertaining and keep the attention span. Fast read, but each story is its own entity. You can skip around and not miss anything.

It is interesting enough to know that Philadelphia, PA, had its seamy side from the latter 1700s to the latter 1900s, and to read of the details. But the author bores the reader with such an inundation of minutiae that one is forced to skim in order not to fall asleep.

This book is awesome. Philadelphia is a city that is rich in history with a lot of crazy happening here over the centuries. Thomas Keels does a great job sharing these stories.

wonderful history

Book a little boring to me

Very interesting book, great stories, a fast read...

Author is a friend of mine! 👌

Aa, an, the. Use the article a before a word beginning with a consonant sound, including the aspirate h: a car; a hotel; a historical. Also use it before words like union, euphonious and unit. Use an before a word beginning with a vowel sound: onion; uncle; honor. The choice of article before an abbreviation, a numeral or a symbol depends upon the likely pronunciation: an N.Y.U. student; a C.I.A. officer; an 11-year-old girl.Avoid the journalese practice of dropping A or The at the beginning of a sentence. If several consecutive sentences or paragraphs begin with the same article, recast some to break the monotony. An article should appear before each parallel noun in a series or a pair: The ambulance carried a nurse, a paramedic and a doctor; The hero and the heroine received medals. Make an exception if the nouns convey a single idea: a bow and arrow; a hook and eye.In the title of a literary, artistic or musical work—in English or a foreign language—omit the opening word a, an or the when it follows another article: an “Old Curiosity Shop” character. If the opening article in a title is necessary information, rephrase the surrounding sentence to avoid direct juxtaposition with a second article. If a foreign-language expression begins with an article and appears in an English-language passage, translate the article: at the Arc de Triomphe. But if the article forms part of a title, uppercase it, untranslated: Le Monde; La Scala. Also see the.A.A. for Alcoholics Anonymous.AAA (without periods). The former American Automobile Association has adopted the initials as its full official name.A.&P. for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, the supermarket chain. In a headline, insert a thin space after the ampersand, to balance the appearance of the preceding period.AARP, an association of middle-aged and older Americans, was the American Association of Retired Persons until 1999. The newer name, written without periods, is officially considered neither an abbreviation nor an acronym.A.B. or B.A. for Bachelor of Arts. Also: a bachelor’s degree.A.B.A. for the American Bankers Association, the American Bar Association or the American Booksellers Association. In headlines, abbreviate only when the context is unmistakable.abbreviations. Commonly used abbreviations are listed separately. In general, spell out the names of government bureaus and agencies, well-known organizations, companies, etc., on first reference. In later references, use short forms like the agency or the company when possible because handfuls of initials make for mottled typography and choppy prose. Here is an example of what not to do: The U.A.W. and the U.M.W. supported the complaints made by the W.H.O., Unicef and the F.A.O., but A.F.L.-C.I.O. leaders did not. When abbreviations are highly familiar, though, long or cumbersome expressions may be shortened even on first reference, and especially afterward. Examples include A.F.L.-C.I.O., C.I.A. and F.B.I. If the article deals centrally with such an organization, the full name should appear somewhere in the copy.Abbreviations may be used more freely in headlines. A title that would be spelled out in copy may be shortened with a surname in a headline: Gen. Barany; Gov. Lamb; Rep. Berenich (but not Sen., even in a headline). Place designations and company terms may also be abbreviated in headlines: Fifth Ave. (or 5th Ave.); Fordham Rd.; Patchin Pl.; Brooklyn Hts.; Acme Co.; News Corp. And Department may be abbreviated in a headline as part of a name (State Dept.).Even freer use of abbreviations is permitted in charts, listings and tables to conserve space. All standard abbreviations may be used, as well as coined contractions, so long as they are understandable. In all types of copy, avoid unfamiliar or specialized short forms like R.W.D.S.U. (for Retail, Wholesale & Department Store Union).Ordinarily use periods in abbreviations when the letters stand for separate words: F.C.C.; N.R.A. Use no spaces after the periods within an abbreviation. (But use thin spaces between personal initials, even those forming part of a company or organizational name: J. C. Penney.)In an acronym—an abbreviation pronounced as a word—omit periods. Ordinarily uppercase such an expression if it is up to four letters long: NATO; CUNY; AIDS; SALT. Acronyms of five or more letters are upper-and-lowercased: Unicef; Unesco; Alcoa; Awacs. (Lowercased exceptions exist, and the dictionary is the guide: modem; radar; sonar.)Omit periods in certain technology terms for which the full expression is unfamiliar or rarely used: USB, PDF, URL, DSL, DVR, LED. If the term is central to an article, include a full reference and brief explanation at some point. Abbreviations popular in online and texting slang should be used only rarely, for special effect, and should be rendered as readers most often see them: BTW, FYI, LOL, OMG, tl;dr, etc.If a corporation adopts a former abbreviation or other cluster of letters as its full name, without periods, follow that style: the AT&T Corporation; the ITT Corporation. When letters within a single word are extracted for use as an abbreviation, they are capitalized without periods: DDT; TV; TB. (By contrast, V.D. requires the periods because it stands for two words.)For consistency in references to broadcasting services, networks and stations, omit periods in all their abbreviations, and in call letters (CBS, CNN, PBS, NPR, WNBC, KPFA).Also see acronyms; company and corporation names; department; state abbreviations; subway lines; television networks.ABC for the former American Broadcasting Companies, now a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. ABC operates the ABC Television Network. ABC News and ABC Sports are divisions of the network, which also owns and operates 10 television stations, among them WABC-TV. Any of these names, as well as ABC, may be used in a first reference. (Do not attribute an ABC News production to ABC Television.) ABC may stand alone in later references and should stand alone when several networks are mentioned together: ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC will televise the news conference.A B C’s (the alphabet or the basics). Use thin spaces between the letters.able-bodied.ABM for antiballistic missile.abortion. The political and emotional heat surrounding abortion gives rise to a range of polemical language. For the sake of neutrality, avoid pro-life and pro-choice except in quotations from others. Impartial terms include abortion rights advocate and anti-abortion campaigner (or, in either case, campaign, group or rally). Anti-abortion is an undisputed modifier, but pro-abortion raises objections when applied to people who say they do not advocate having abortions. Abortionist carries overtones of stealth and illegality. In copy about abortion, woman and fetus are more neutral terms than mother (for a pregnant woman) and baby (for a fetus).absence. See lack.absolutely necessary. A redundancy.Abstract Expressionism. Capitalize when referring to the postwar American art movement. Recognized Abstract Expressionists include Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. See arts terminology.A.C. for an athletic club after the first reference and in headlines: the Downtown Athletic Club; Downtown A.C.academic degrees and titles. See separate entries. Also see Dr.; Prof.academic departments. Lowercase history department, English literature department, etc. (school, college or university). That wording is preferred, but style also permits department of natural history; department of English literature.Académie Française, the. Equally acceptable, in most contexts: the French Academy.academy. Lowercase in later references to the French Academy and the National Academy of Sciences. For the United States Military, Naval, Coast Guard and Air Force Academies, on later references make it the Air Force Academy or the academy.Academy Award(s); the award(s); the Oscar(s). Articles dealing centrally with the awards should mention that they are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In brief or passing references, Oscar can stand alone, without explanation. Also see Emmy Award(s); Grammy Award(s); Tony Award(s).a cappella.accent marks are used for French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German words and names. For simplicity, use the marks uniformly with uppercase and lowercase letters, despite conventions that treat certain uppercase accents as optional. Do not use accents in words or names from other languages (Slavic and Scandinavian ones, for example), which are less familiar to most American writers, editors and readers; such marks would be prone to error. Some foreign words that enter the English language keep their accent marks (protégé, résumé); others lose them (cafe, facade). The dictionary governs spellings, except for those shown in this manual. In the name of a United States resident, use or omit accents as the bearer does; when in doubt, omit them. (Exception: Use accents in Spanish names of Puerto Rico residents.)Times style calls for six marks:Accent MarkséThe acute accent on an e in French signifies an “ay” sound (communiqué). In Spanish or Portuguese it denotes an irregularly placed syllable stress (Lázaro; simpático).àThe grave accent alters various vowel sounds in French (frère; voilà) and occasionally in Portuguese. In Italian it marks an irregularly placed syllable stress (Pietà; tiramisù). In Italian and French it sometimes distinguishes between similar-looking words (où and ou; la and là).ôThe circumflex, in French, may modify vowel sounds (Rhône) or signify the evolutionary disappearance of an s that existed in Latin (hôtel). In Portuguese the circumflex usually marks syllable stress (Antônio).çThe cedilla beneath a c, in French or Portuguese, produces the soft sound of s in front of certain vowels that would otherwise dictate a hard k sound (garçon; français).ñThe tilde, in Spanish, produces a y sound after n (mañana). In Portuguese it denotes a nasal vowel sound (São Paulo).üThe umlaut modifies vowel sounds in German (Götterdämmerung; Düsseldorf). Some news wires replace the umlaut with an e after the affected vowel. Normally undo that spelling, but check before altering a personal name; some Germans use the e form. In the Latin languages, the umlaut is known as a dieresis. It denotes separated pronunciation of two adjacent vowels (naïve; Citroën; Noël), or signals pronunciation of a normally silent final consonant (Saint-Saëns; Perrier-Jouët).Two Spanish punctuation marks—¿ and ¡—are available for special effects. But ordinarily punctuate Spanish questions and exclamations in English style.access. Use it only as a noun; as a verb it is technical jargon. Conversational substitutes abound: look up, retrieve, find, connect, enter and even gain access.accommodate.accouterment.accused. Just as an accused stockbroker is a stockbroker, an accused forger is some type of forger. Avoid any construction that implies guilt on the part of someone merely accused, charged or suspected. Also see allegedly.Achilles’ heel (not Achilles heel or Achilles’s). The exceptional style is customary for the possessive of a classical name.acknowledgment.acre. An acre equals 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards or 4,047 square meters. The metric hectare equals 10,000 square meters or 2.47 acres. In copy, generally convert hectares into acres; if the hectare figure is a round number, round the acres as well.acronym. An acronym is a word formed from the first letter (or letters) of each word in a series: NATO from North Atlantic Treaty Organization; radar from radio detection and ranging. (Unless pronounced as a word, an abbreviation is not an acronym.) When an acronym serves as a proper name and exceeds four letters, capitalize only the first letter: Unesco; Unicef. Also see abbreviations; company and corporation names.across from. Often opposite is smoother: The shop was across from the school. In that sentence, across seems to need an object. Make it The shop was across 50th Street from the school, or The shop was opposite the school.acting. Uppercase only when it modifies an uppercased title: Acting Attorney General Hilary B. Miel; the acting attorney general; the acting secretary of state; the acting secretary; the acting chairwoman of the committee. Generally move a long title after the name, to avoid this awkwardness: Acting Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Hilary B. Miel.actor, actress. While actor can refer to a woman as well as to a man, actress remains widely used and seems exempt from most objections to grafted feminine endings. See men and women.acts, amendments, bills and laws. Capitalize the name of an act or a law when using the full title or a commonly known shorter form: Sherman Antitrust Act; Social Security Act; Taft-Hartley Act; Multiple Dwelling Law; etc. But lowercase act when it stands alone or in a general description: the antitrust act; the housing act.A draft measure is a bill until it is enacted; then it becomes an act or a law. Lowercase the names of bills and proposed constitutional amendments not yet enacted into law (housing bill; food stamp bill) except for proper names occurring in the description (Baranek-Lamm bill).A ratified amendment to the United States Constitution is capitalized in a reference to its formal title (including the number): the Fifth Amendment; the 18th Amendment. But lowercase an informal title (the income tax amendment), except words that are capitalized in their own right (the Prohibition amendment).Act Up. Upper-and-lowercase the name of the protest group concerned with AIDS issues. (It is not an advocacy group.) Its full name is the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power.acute accent. See accent marks.A.D. for anno Domini. Since it means in the year of the Lord (or of our Lord), place the abbreviation ahead of the numerals: The town was founded in A.D. 73. In a reference to a century, though, the number comes first: fourth century A.D.B.C., for before Christ, always follows the date: founded in 128 B.C. or The town dates from the second century B.C.adage. The word means an old saying. So old adage is redundant.addresses. For the names of streets, avenues, etc., in ordinary copy, spell out and capitalize ordinal numbers: First through Ninth. Also spell out and capitalize Avenue, Street, West, East, etc.: First Avenue; Fifth Avenue; Park Avenue; East Ninth Street. Use figures for 10th and above: 10th Avenue; West 14th Street; 42nd Street; West 113th Street. When an address includes a compass point, abbreviate it without periods: 818 C Street SE; 1627 I Street NW.Use the plural (Streets or Avenues) when and appears in a location: between 43rd and 44th Streets. But use the singular in a to phrase: along Fifth Avenue, from 43rd to 44th Street. For “decades” of numbered streets, use figures: the 60s; the East 60s; the West 80s; the 130s; etc.Avenue, Street, Road and the like may be abbreviated with a name (Ave.; St.; Rd.) in headlines, charts, maps, lists and tables, but not in ordinary copy. In headlines, figures may also be used for the ordinal numbers through 9th in the designations of streets and avenues. But avoid 1st.Use figures for all building numbers: 1 Fifth Avenue; 510 Broadway; 893 12th Avenue. When numbers exceed three digits, omit commas: 1135 11th Avenue. Omit No. before a building number except in a phrase like at 510 Broadway, but not at No. 512.

The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage, fifth edition (2015) is easy to use. Since I have not used earlier editions, I cannot compare/contrast with previous editions; this is my first use of this manual. However, I find the manual concise and informative. The manual may be short on examples, but that's not a criticism. The conciseness tells you what you need to know about correct word use as well as capitalization and abbreviations.

This is a great resource for writing and editing. I use it and recommend it.

I have tried a number of style manuals over the 17 years I've been writing my memoir. How I regret I didn't buy this one earlier! Easy to use, authoritative, complete. In just a few days it saved me hours of research.

handy though perhaps not quite as good as some older editions. Still it is a good item to have on the shelf when writing.

Very helpful, easy to use, with all topics alphabetized in a single section. I often consult more than one manual, so this is a good addition to the shelf (with AP Stylebook, APA Publication Manual, MLA Handbook, Chicago Manual of Style, and The Copyeditor's Handbook).

With all the confusion regarding proper writing skills these days, I felt this book would be very helpful in clarifying proper English, which it does do. I consider the newspaper the best in America and the consummate authority on this, and would be willing to cite it if anyone questioned me on my usage.

Received it promptly as promised. I like the content of the document, but the paper quality was very cheap. I'm sure it will yellow and become brittle long before I finished using the document, and would have gladly paid additional for better paper quality.

very useful book for twitter especially
